CLARIFICATION ON SCHOOL CLOSING DURING THE PANDEMIC

Dear Families and Staff:

This weekend I had a parent email me asking for clarification on when the students will be returning to school. I would imagine many of you might have that same question.

Originally, we were out of school through April 3rd; and then we were closed indefinitely. We do know that the Governor's Safer at Home order is in place until April 24th. The state will determine when students return to school. It may be when the order is lifted, or it may not be until the end of the school year.

Even though the district is allowed to apply to the state for a waiver of instructional  minutes, we plan to provide instruction according to our school year calendar, which is through the last Friday in May.

This is certainly an unprecedented period in our lives and that of our children.  It will be talked about for years to come. Our school facilities are closed, and spring sports are postponed. Music concerts were canceled, but state solo & ensemble contests may still be done virtually for students who want that option.  Prom is postponed, as could possibly be our May events, such as recognition ceremonies, and graduation.

And to those of you with seniors, we empathize with you over the special memories that are supposed to be a part of this last year in school for you and your child.  Even though our seniors were born during the 9/11 tragedy, and are now dealing with this pandemic, we can help them realize that through this all, they are being asked to experience a resilience and strength like no other class has in the most important time in their high school career. We need to reassure them that we will get beyond this and we can’t wait to see what their talents and gifts will bring to brighten this world!

Academics are important, and we appreciate your partnership with us in doing the very best you can to support your children’s learning. Your child’s mental health is very important, as well. The best thing you can do, as a parent, is to help your child create their own memories of this time in their personal history. Keeping a journal of photos, videos, pictures, reflections, etc., along with interviews of you will help them record the day to day activities, the events, their fears and their feelings.  When this is all over, save it and keep it in a safe place for them. They will have a keepsake like no other to share with their own children and grandchildren.

Reorganizing our daily lives has not been easy for anyone. We are grateful to watch so many helpers in the world making efforts, large and small, to protect vulnerable people and assist in meeting the many needs. In the coming days, we will be sharing resources from some of our partners to help you cope with this uncertain time as a parent, and with your family.
Please know that we are here to assist you in any way we can, as we deal with the challenges each day and bring a sense of hope for the future! Together we are stronger! Take care, be safe, and stay healthy!
